I’ve had some pretty epic PINES, including a really close friendship that was unrequited love on one side with @Pyrephox that was just…SO good.
I did go through a period where it felt like my characters’ romantic interest ALWAYS ended up pining, unrequited, etc., and it was a little lulzy and also a little sad when I did sometimes want to have a little bit of ship! But there was also some really great story as part of that, and I don’t regret it for a moment.

ETA: I love the initial rush and establishment of a good romance but I love it when the relationship tackles problems together too, supporting each other through separate and joint crisis and the character growth that comes from that. All my favorite romance RP has been long term. Like one night stands are great but have you ever moved a relationship from that into a turbulent emotionally charge marriage, into withstanding an invasion together and leading your armies with your newborn strapped to your chest while your spouses lead your people to safety, only for you to have a passionate reunion a week later?

@crawfish I admit, I would like more one-night stands and other “romantic” relationships that aren’t straightforward romances. Give me bitter but conflicted exes. Give me “oh shit, I hooked up randomly with this person and discovered the next day they’re my new boss/employee”. Give me “I woke up after a really wild night next to this guy/gal I hate, and what I remember of the sex was mindblowing, but I still fucking hate them”.

I really love depthful platonic relationships too. I keep thinking abt some really deep friendship connections I’ve played and how it doesn’t all have to be romance to be epic.

I hate pining and slow burn. I just like a nice romance story as part of a character’s life, and I’ve never had any particular trouble keeping a long term relationship engaging but they were with really amazing RPers, which probably helps. This isn’t a super deep addition to the conversation, I just want to +1 romance as a genre.

I really enjoy the types of characters that rub a lot of people the wrong way (for ideological or personal reasons, not for creep/squick reasons). One of the most rewarding parts of playing those characters is developing the few deep friendships with people who invested time in looking deeper at the character to see the virtues that I’ve buried beneath the surface.

I think I’m envious of a lot of folks. Because I can say that this is something I really enjoy in RP, but so many times it’s been soured by OOC communications, or in often times, lack thereof. Boundaries were not set, discussions were not had, and then there’s hurt feelings all around. And I think, because of those interactions, I’ve become extremely gunshy about participating in that aspect of RP.
It’s also why I no longer do that kind of RP with players I don’t know or don’t have already an established communication or friendship with. There’s just too many unknown or variables and it almost gives me stress to even consider. I don’t like that, I wish I wasn’t like that, and I wish I could really enjoy that kind of RP more. But more often than not, I find myself avoiding it simply as means of self-preservation.
That said, the last two IC romances I’ve had in last two years have gone well, but likely because I followed my own advice above, someone I know, and having a discussion before anything happened.
ETA: That said, I do miss the spontaneity of some romances, how they just evolve organically and end up being great. That, I think, is the one thing I miss the most.
