RE: MU Peeves Threadposted in Rough and Rowdy
Is raising a skill mid-scene really that rampant of a problem that we really need to twist ourselves into knots over this? Like, do people do this for real or is this some mythologized outlier situation? Rather than preemptively punish everyone for one theoretical idiot, why not simply toss out that idiot if and when this occurs?
I gotta tell you, I was just in a scene rolling quite possibly my highest skill the entire time… and I still (hilariously, in a fun way) got my ass kicked by the dice. Specifically, basically a huge chicken attacked my ass. You can raise a skill all you want. It’s no guarantee.

Parameters are important, but it harshes my vibe when poses take a backseat to a wall of dice roll output.
ETA: It’s also totally chill that crunchy mechanics are some folks’ happy place. We can play different places.

RE: Discussion: On Dragon Wingsposted in Game Gab
Our latest plot has wrapped up! The wingleader of the rogue dragonriders was killed in battle.

The ambitious goldrider behind it all has been defeated and imprisoned while her dragon waits to lay her eggs. The Weyrs are still navigating the sustainability and resource-sink of this arrangement, as well as how exactly they want to hold her and her supporters accountable. (There already aren’t enough dragons, and the rest of the world does need them to survive.)
The next leg of our rogue dragonrider plot begins to kick off in August, and the next hatchings are slated for early July and mid-August. For anybody on the fence, it’s a good low pressure time to ease into the theme.

@catzilla Narrative power sets (1-2 paragraph explanation of range and min/max impact) with a baseline skill to roll.
the only OC-only game I remember really taking off used Mutants & Masterminds but I didn’t log into anywhere but Shang for a decade so i could be missing dozens of examples
I’m not familiar with that system. In my old age, I defer more and more toward not creating unnecessary activity. Nothing more eye-roll inducing than a system that’s complicated where it could have been simple. I’m here to write.

@Meg I just think it lacks narrative direction. Offense.

I may, however, be wrong. Faux-lesbians with breastesses the size and shape of watermelons and nipples like rifle-barrels are probably just as popular as they ever were.
I think people should be free to be the big tiddied queer women they want to see in the world.
Anyway, I do miss the originality of OC-centered superhero games that were going for a couple years. I love marvel comics/x-men verse, but these everything-and-the-kitchen-sink mu*s…~

RE: When is the last time you played?posted in Game Gab
@RightMeow said in When is the last time you played?:
I was on a previous game that’s practically dead if not dead, so no I won’t name and shame. However, the staff there would hold RP lectures on what my char should do. They didn’t hurt anyone. The people involved were having a good time. Every decision I made felt like if it didn’t benefit the person in charge or completely follow their vision, I got IC lectures. It’s not fun. Or I’d be told OOC how I wasn’t great. Also not fun. I happen to think I’m amazing and awesome and all those things (cough cough). Sometimes the world and the game created gets so consumed on the main trunk of the story, they don’t allow branches to form. That’s some of the best RP.
I played on an x-men revolution game that did this a lot with the performance critiques. It almost made me leave the hobby entirely.

One of those games should change their name.

I think we should just lean into it.

RE: LFRP: Light and support character acceptable places?posted in Comments & Feedback
@Aria I can see there being that immediacy/need/“obligation” happening with games as they first open especially, but agree, after things get going and chill out~~ we’re all just trying to fucking exist. I say, returning to rp after a flakey stint being burnt out by rl.

RE: Does Anyone Even Care?posted in Game Gab
@bear_necessities 12 months for the whole damn game. I could see doing it in 7-8, but I think like… what if someone didn’t app the correct character right away and has to make a switch? What if they don’t find the game until it’s been going a month? What if rl happens and you have to drop off for 2 weeks? That offers some padding.
My tabletop group does a new campaign every year with the GM rotating out after their storyline is done, back in once the others have cycled through. It’s done a lot for our longevity.
ETA: I guess it could be 12 for the “season,” too.

RE: Does Anyone Even Care?posted in Game Gab
@bear_necessities All of our attention spans have changed. There’s a lot of appeal for anthology games, though I’d lean more toward the 12 month mark to accomplish meaningful story, personally.

RE: Does Anyone Even Care?posted in Game Gab
There plenty of reasons to leave a game.
To @bear_necessities’s take, finishing a personal storyline is also more important to me than a game’s overall storyline. (Even though in an ideal world, those are connected.)
The last few games I left, it was because… a) they got way too big, too fast for me to keep up with game happenings at the level I prefer, b) even though I liked the game, players entered my sphere who I was already trying to avoid and I protect my peace, c) “season 2” storyline just didn’t do it for me the way the original storyline did.
