That’s a real spicy pair of posts for their intro to this particular community.
Doubt this was their intro. That person showed up with their butt already hurting.

@Ashkuri I can’t handle that initial bubble. The flurry of activity. The dropping anvils of constant forum posts. If I like a game, I’ll try to cling on until the storm passes. (I guess after 3 months?!) But most of the time I’ll just nope out and maybe give it a swing once things settle into what the actual player base and game tempo is going to be.
I don’t like it, so it’s a bad thing.
@Gashlycrumb I lean more towards the grad school approach, and think magic school can be fun.
@bear_necessities Magic systems can be done. It is known. I wouldn’t call them sustainable on large-scale games per se, or ones that don’t cap their players. I miss how old school Marvel games approached powers where there’s just a reasonable narrative scope that requires the consent and cooperation of the player characters who might be impacted. But I might just be burnt out on crunchy game mechanics. Systems should serve the story, not the other way around.
@bear_necessities I was under the impression that the first attempt never even ran, and the second was just a direct copy & paste of their wiki. I assume without permission given the individual involved.
It was a lot of fun for two weeks of those three weeks. Can’t speak to the longevity of the theme. It’s just an rp vacation I took once. Met somebody real weird. But also made some new friends I still rp with to this day!
@Raistlin rn my tabletop group is playing a Pokemon Journey/Hunger Games mashup, and it’s produced some unexpectedly good story

@Jennkryst Battletech Lords and Ladies is as important as the mechs. Probably more so.

a game where I get to pilot a mech suit like in Iron Widow/Heavenly Tyrant
whispers Iron Widow/Heavenly Tyrant is Lords and Ladies

You right, 2025. Time to lower my expectations. This is my lane, I’ll be right here in it.
@Sillylily Slayers, the Buffyverse audiobook by Amber Benson, was pretty effing entertaining, imo. It was kinda like listening to an olde-timey radio show, but make it Buffy. ~If anybody is looking for something in that realm.
Temporarily took down most of my professional online presence a few weeks ago out of an abundance of caution, and felt like a coward doing so. This week, professors at the school have started to show up on lists for teaching radical ideology. Today I fielded my first otherwise innocuous request for a past syllabus from a former student who absolutely fits the bill.
The idea of me blocking someone and them receiving any notification other than “X is not receiving OOC pages right now” stresses me out.
@Faraday Most Ares games seem fairly small. Forum blocks (and even in some cases channel blocks) pose the risk of players missing out on key game information/context. But we’re adults, so if somebody wants to roll those dice… they should be able to, I guess.
If it’s an issue of not wanting to hear that person over there breathing or somebody you don’t vibe with taking up a lot of space, an easily undone/temp ignore option seems reasonable.
@TNP I just had something similar occur this week. Sicker than he’s ever been in his entire life, nobody slept all week, and then suddenly, tail up, ready to eat again.
Not a peeve per se, but one of the things I do regret not really doing is engaging with the generational aspects of L&L/fantasy theme yet (in a non-kinky way, SORRY). Even though I closed out my big char on Arx with a kid to contribute to whatever imagined future for her situation, it was kinda just something I tossed in at the end cause it was on my bucket list.
Playing on Concordia did show me that it’s fun as hell to play the royal parent of young adult children* in L&L games.
*if you can manage to get relatively sane players for those characters
I don’t know if anyone else here is in the lit mag world, but this serial plagiarizer dude is becoming like wack-a-mole. Why? Why plagiarize some sweet stranger’s poem or personal essay? There’s no money in this. It’s under various aliases, so there’s no sharing this with real life friends or family. What the actual fuck is wrong with you?
@ten The Black Body in Ecstasy is a good read on that subject. Obviously it centers Black feminism, but a lot of the discourse can be applied elsewhere.
