        Life giveth, life taketh.

It’s taken me a while to post this, but I did share a billion pictures of her, so I figured. We lost my dog back at the beginning of August. She was thirteen, so she had a very good run (and run, and run, and run…), and she’d started getting a bit blind and probably a little deaf, but she was otherwise quite healthy. Then what we thought was a bad UTI turned out to be bladder cancer, and it was pretty clear she already had a partial blockage. Hardest fucking decision I’ve ever had to make, but she went quick and peaceful and on a good day.

There’ll be another dog, hopefully sooner rather than later, maybe even much sooner, but there’ll never be another Riley. She was with me and my family through our hardest times. She was, genuinely, my best friend.

I like to think she’s being a little shit to my brother right now.

On condition of his FeLV test coming back negative tomorrow…

We adopted the kitty they recommended to us - a ten year old little man currently named Steely Daniel, which is absolutely fantastic as a name but we’re generally not jamming out to “Reelin’ in the Years”.

I am trying to convince insomniac that his name should be Sir Catrick Stewart, instead.

He has a snaggle toofs and a wonky eye that we’re hoping is just some glaucoma and will be taking him to our regular vet ASAP to confirm.

              Random Update on This Cat:

I do not know why it took this dude five months to get adopted. He’s fucking awesome. Adopt old pets, guys. They’re great.

1 year, 8 months, and 8 days ago, my little boy Shadow died. One day I noticed he was eating less and losing weight. Then he stopped eating completely. Doctors couldn’t find anything. Less than 3 weeks later, he was dead. He was 14.5 years old. t was horrible. But at least I still had his mother, Sable.

Last week, I noticed she was feeling bonier than normal. She was always thin and underweight but not like this. I took her in for and exam and blood test, hoping it was her thyroid. That’s very treatable. Blood test results, if not normal, didn’t indicate anything that would be the cause, just symptoms. Yesterday she had an ultrasound.

There are masses in her abdomen. Without further, expensive testing, they can’t be absolutely certain but it almost certainly is cancer. The vet said three times how sorry he is. She’s 16.5.

And now I get to go through it all again, this inexorable journey towards a yawning abyss of overwhelming, crushing grief and not even one of my kids left. My heart is breaking already and I can only hope it really does on the day that’s inevitably coming.

@TNP I don’t know of its the microplastics in the water or what, but this is exactly what my flatmate’s cat a few years ago, and then more recently her dog, both ended up getting. Like, literally the exact same thing, both of them. Leading to internal bleeding, which didn’t help anything. We made sure they both had the best final day as possible, but shit suuuucks.

@TNP My condolences. 😞 It’s so hard to lose your furry buddies, especially to something like cancer.

She’s dying. The most important part of my life is going to be forever lost to me along with our little boy. I’ve scheduled a vet to come tomorrow. I just wish the vet could have a second shot for me.

I’ve felt keener grief for animals in my life than I have for humans. I’m very sorry you’re going through this.

I can’t explain it. She got better. The day before the vet was scheduled to come, she started to improve. Began to drink, eat, was steadier on her feet. The next morning, she obviously wasn’t back to normal but I canceled the vet. Today, it’s like nothing was wrong. We both got a reprieve.

@TNP I just had something similar occur this week. Sicker than he’s ever been in his entire life, nobody slept all week, and then suddenly, tail up, ready to eat again.

My cat, Veronica Mars, passed away Monday night. She was my special little girl for 17 years. My wife and I are devastated. There are no words to express how much we’re going to miss her.
