So we’re getting our first images from the James Webb Telescope, and they’re beyond stunning.
I know these are all over the internet right now, but in case anybody hadn’t seen them… well.
-
-
I’ve been watching these roll in with joy. So cool. Makes me really miss playing my NASA nerd character where I could harass people about this stuff in RP.
-
-
Turn this up higher, I want to see how far back into the past we can view.
-
So excited and happy about these images.
-
@Testament The second image is 4.6 billion years. So that’s pretty good, I think.
-
@Testament
ETA: I have removed the gif of static, because we don’t have spoiler tags that I can find and it was a fuckin’ eyesore.There you go. Start of the universe far back enough?
-
@Pavel Nah, I want to see the previous universe before this one.
-
Looking at these legit makes me tear up. The vastness of it, the beauty, the potential.
-
@Pyrephox I teared up too
-
It’s not often that we get to feel wonder like this, I think.
-
Oh, if anyone wants higher res images, they can all be found here:
-
First of all, how dare you trick me into thinking SpaceTruckGame was finally happening.
Secondly, golly I picked the
worstbest time to start reading a book full of existential dread about intergalactic sociology and which also solves the Fermi paradox. -
@Jennkryst three body problem is pretty great

Also the fact that I’m just running down the thread upvoting everyone tells you something about how I feel about space.

Space is just so darn beautiful.
And mindnumbingly vast when you think about it.

Quoted for truth, and to answer the question, will give the short review later, but also spoilers because a lot of it comes in book 2 of a trilogy.
-
@Jennkryst I picked up that book a few days ago, actually. I haven’t started it yet, but been looking forward to reading it!

Loved it. It’s very much in the high concept line of SF, but man, there’s some fascinating stuff in there. Also, I had done reading on the Cultural Revolution a few years ago, so it was interesting getting something that grew directly out of the consequences of that in sensibility.
