@Alamias It’s possible that Deborah Woll has said she hasn’t been approached because if she has, and they’re waiting to reveal that information, she can’t say whether or not she has contractually. Will Wheaton also said he wouldn’t be in Picard for a long time, but that if he WERE approached, he’d gladly accept the role. And lo - he was in the last episode of the 2nd season.

@Nynrose The best part about Wheaton being kept secret was how I, and everyone I know, were livid that he wasn’t mentioned in the Picard S3 promo ads, which… yeah. Wheaton and Crosby absolutely should be in it. But still, showing up in that last episode got us all like ‘… alright, we still want him in S3, but this gives Wesley a satisfying exit, if not’.

… unrelated, but we are also annoyed that Admiral Sheer Fucking Hubris from S1 wasn’t Janeway.

The final season of His Dark Materials is almost here.

          big excite

I loved the first two seasons. It’s based on a children’s book series, so I mainly watched Season One for nostalgia’s sake, but the second was so good it made me want to reread the books all over again.

It’s a critically underrated fantasy series IMO and for those of you with kids at home, you could also watch it with them as it’s relatively child-friendly. (On the same level as Sandman or the Harry Potter series for example; i.e. there’s still some scary stuff, but no rape and murder-birth scenes or whatever.)

It’s also free to watch on BBC iPlayer if you’re either in the UK or using a VPN.

@Kestrel I am SUPER EXCITED for the new season of this, but

i would not describe sandman as child-friendly idk. i guess i did originally read the comics starting sometime like middle school maybe. but harry potter and his dark materials were works written for kids or young adults, so probably a bit different.

@Kestrel I read the series as an adult and didn’t understand why so many people were alarmed at the idea of it becoming a children’s movie. After devouring all three books all in a week, I definitely got why and couldn’t recommend it enough to everyone I met. The movie was visually stunning but otherwise disappointing.

I was very excited about HBO picking up the series and it has not disappointed me one bit. I AM SO GLAD THE FINAL SEASON IS FINALLY almost HERE. I’m sure it’s going to be just as satisfying as the previous. I love this format of 1 season:1 book, it gives enough room for all the details not just the ‘important’ ones and I hope everyone does this in the future. I hear Rick Riordan’s series is getting the same treatment. YAY!

              excited

I thought Strange New Worlds was the best Star Trek in the market these days.

As it turns out, that crown probably goes to Lower Decks. I don’t know how the hell, but it’s really good.

                        NOOOOOOOOOOO!

But, also, it’s probably because James Gunn is now one of the co-Leaders of the DC Comics Franchise and Henry Cavill is now going on to play Superman again.

What do you mean, it clearly says it is cancelled after 3 seasons, I will not be fooled by this obvious attempt to Mandela effect some tomfoolery into existence.

                                  @Coin The thing is…

If they HAD cast Mads, he would have shown up able to do everything day one, because of some obscure thing in his past, up to and including potion brewing and slaying actual monsters.

                                  Edit because I can’t spell.

                                    GOD DAMN, the Andor finale.

                                    GOD. DAMN.

I love this show so much. This is everything I had loved about Star Wars growing up but eventually given up on as the the franchise moved further and further towards the lowest common denominator and cynical nostalgia explotation.

This isn’t grown manchildren smashing action figures together, it’s artful cinematography and metaphor and philosophy, politics right on the sleeves, it’s relevant and poignant and personal and powerful. I am absolutely shocked Disney produced this and allowed it to air, lol.

YEEEEEEE. I have been extremely meh on the Star Wars series – and this is as someone who grew up watching the original trilogy RELIGIOUSLY. I could RECITE THEM FROM MEMORY. But none of the series really managed to catch and pull me in. I’m not a big TV person.

Honestly, I probably would’ve given Andor a pass, too, but one of my friends was SO INTO IT, and the Star Wars / Disney machine is SO MUCH NOT HIS THING that I was surprised enough to pay attention. And man, what a show. I was nagging @Roz all day yesterday to see if she was ready to go watch the finale. Such a solid finale. Such a good show.

Rather than rehash everything you said which I 100% agree with, I also wanted to give a shout-out to extremely cool worldbuilding and cultural design in the locales in this series too:

Space Florida, Ferrix, the mountainous planet with the garrison and the Eye (and the characters who live there) – all of it’s new and all of it just comes alive.

I woke up feeling so good, I think I’d better call in sick/ I need a personal trainer to help me hold my drink
I plan to be spontaneous next time we meet/I’m putting off procrastinating until next week
I’ll get onto it when I give a shit

But yeah, Andor very good. There is just the one thing I expected to happen in the finale, which didn’t, but the thing that does happen instead validates the other theory about it I have, so still gets a 12/10.
