Whether this is an impulse that should actually be maneuvered around or indulged is always where I get stuck because this stuff bottoms out with me pretty quickly, whether it’s via WHO list/where checks or just watching scenes. But, again, whole other things.

Unfortunately Async seems to be increasingly becoming the norm, or at least I’m noticing it more in my latest round of dipping-my-toes-into-Mushing-again. And frankly, it’s burning me out a lot faster.

scenes/openin-game will only show the open scenes. The scenes page on the portal puts the private ones you’re not a part of at the bottom of the list. FWIW, I did once look into making them collapsible as @Third-Eye suggested, but it’s just problematic because it’s all one big table currently.Random thought, but could Ares benefit from a hybrid of Private & Open scenes? One where people can watch the RP as it’s happening, but it’s closed for additional characters entering the scene. You could call it “Full” or something like that.
There’d still be the obstacle of normalizing players of using Full instead of Private, but I feel like it’d help with the penetrability of the game if people could get an eye of what’s happening right now.

You can use scene notes for this, though it’s mainly used for scenes where it’s open but only for particular characters meeting certain criteria. Per the help file:
Used for open scenes where participation is limited (by quantity, character type, etc.) or other special considerations apply.
But honestly, what people are doing in their private scenes is none of anyone’s business. At the risk of being harsh, I’m disinclined to create coded solutions for people who can’t handle that.

Spirit Lake had ‘Watchable’ scenes for a while, which was a tag people could use to make closed scenes viewable to voyeurs. It was a lot of fun, honestly, but the code broke after like every update so I don’t think it felt worth maintaining.

Maybe I’m in the minority, but I don’t like being in private scenes. I’d much rather be in watchable scenes, for many reasons… I don’t like adding to the curtain of private scenes, it gives other players something to read during their downtime, and if it’s going to be shared in the end anyway I have no problem with people reading it before it’s done.
I’m not saying that other players shouldn’t be entitled to their privacy, although I can see how my previous post came off like that. My mistake. I was intending to refer to people like me who prefer being in watchable scenes.
Or maybe I’m the only one who likes that. I don’t know.

Oh I’m sure you’re not. My comment about “none of their business” was just in general, not meant to be directed at you. Sorry if that was unclear.
Personally I always found the “+watch” code from days of yore intensely uncomfortable. Not because I was doing anything truly private (I post most of my scenes anyway), but just because it bothers me feeling like I have someone looking over my shoulder. I turn off my “X players watching you” indicator in video games for similar reasons
So I’m not going to code anything like that for Ares, but like I mentioned, scene notes should cover the basic need. -

don’t threaten us with a good time

I’m primarily distract/async due to, well, life, but I’ve found that there’s async and then there’s ASYNC. I’m fine with async with poses as infrequent as maybe once a day or two but after a while, I find myself in situations where people pose every 3-4 days and I find myself unable to even focus properly as my head just falls out of the situation.
Again, I know this is necessary sometimes, it’s just not ideal for me.

Yep yep yep, exactly the same. I’m not a nervous person - I don’t get stage-fright, I’m not bashful about asking for RP, I don’t even mind having people read my logs. But having someone watch my RP live twigs me in a way I can’t put my finger on.
Part of it is that I’m willing to be a lot more vulnerable in private RP, especially if it’s with somebody I’m comfortable with, and letting that out in “private” and then sharing it afterward is a lot different than letting someone uninvolved watch things unfold live. There’s a rawness in the moment of writing something (even if it’s a crazy async scene) that gets lost in logs. I know I’ve read my own logs after the fact and been like “wow, this scene felt a lot more emotional when I was writing it than when I’m reading it.”
