Like I said, I really feel I didn’t do anything dishonest or gaslighty, I got into a messy situation and I tried what I thought was my best to communicate to all parties whenever it became relevant to do that. Compared and contrasted to some of the other threads, I had no secret scenes, I wasn’t trying to hide my RP from anyone, I was proactively telling other folks before the scenes were posted things that happened ICly.
I’ve been trying to go back and figure out what I could have done differently, and what it’s boiling down to was “I shouldn’t have gone in with that kind of hook” in the first place.
So, like I said. If I stick around in the hobby, no preplanned OOC relationships, minimal “character background history” planning, just whatever happens IC happens IC.
As good as storytelling drama is, it’s not worth the OOC drama.

They are good friends that have a secret between them (well, secret to one, at least), some past traumas, and some underlying resentment that each has. It’s a complicated and beautiful relationship just at that, but right now they aren’t together. They could get together in the future, but they have things they need to work through. And that could be a good story. But it’s not the only way that that story can go.

It’s a clear communication since CountrySingerGirl has met Bailey that any romantic plots likely will end with her and Bailey. Likely. Idk for sure. But likely.
It’s a respect for you and what we’ve discussed without knowing if and how they get there but prioritizing you

I literally brought up to TheOtherWoman OOC before anything that could actually be considered a date that there is a lot of drama around Bailey that could and likely will come up if anything happened romantically between them. And I told her I’d tell her all of it if she wanted to know, she said she’d rather just play it but had a few things she wanted to avoid. I asked her what those were, because if they were anything that I knew would come up, I’d want to tell her before anything happened so we could immediately fizzle anything romantic. Like if she didn’t want to deal with a guy that had a kid, or got his best friend killed, or whatever. She said she wanted no love triangles, explaining that if TheOtherWoman and Bailey got together and then he decided to get with his high school sweeatheart and break up with TheOtherWoman, that’s fine, she just didn’t want him dangling the two at the same time. And that’s when I promised her that wouldn’t happen. In my mind, thinking, if things happened and he got back with CountrySingerGirl, he would immediately tell TheOtherWoman ICly (and give her a heads up OOCly) and the two would break up, and that would be that.
I have tried to do everything I can to be above board. When we started talking a bit more and I realized who you were, I immediately told you who I was despite knowing that there was history there that could turn out unfavorable for me, because I wanted to be transparent even if it went against my own interest.

But he’s not. We talked about that, and decided that he WASN’T. He has a strong affection for her, but at this point, it’s platonic and has been platonic for years. That was what you suggested.

To clarify this last point, there were never any scenes between the characters that were sexual, the characters had hooked up for the fling during the summer years ago (we never really settled whether they had had sex then, but were leaning towards them not), and then we decided that the daughter came about from a weekend they spent together two years prior, and they hadn’t done anything sexual or romantic since.

HOWEVER. At the end, when you did the “you must hate me, we used to rp and then it stopped and I wasn’t sure if it was me or you just got busy”, that’s also something that pings my uh oh detectors when talking to people.
Yeah. I left it in there in the interests of full disclosure and not hiding anything. I’ve seen since then in reading some of the recent threads how that is something that can be manipulative, but really that was my trying to give her a ripcord if there was something bad from the past.
We talked through it on the Discord. Long story short - we had planned to do some RP on a different game, it didn’t happen because she stopped playing there for a period because her work got super busy, and I hadn’t pestered her on Discord because I figured it was either that (and she couldn’t) or it was because of me (and she wouldn’t want to hear from me).
But yeah, not the best look as a last line. But like I said, I am doing my best to be honest, upfront, and transparent, because I really and truly believe that I did everything in my power to be up front throughout this whole thing.

Oh, we were checking in constantly. After the last line of this log, it was all on Discord. I feel differently about posting screenshots from Discord. I suppose I could go through and try to copy and paste the text and remove her name and such. But a lot of it was about another game and another game’s drama.
Especially since you did admit to also shipping with someone else. What were the PMs with this player when you started the other ship, too, I wonder?
I literally told her point blank, that my character was ICly pursuing the other character and not hers. She did not like that answer. That’s what has been somewhat frustrating for me, is that I was really clear and explicit with both, and was accused of “trying to play both sides”. When in reality, there was never any “present day” romance with Character A, just wistful remembrances of what could have been. And the possibility that it could come back around in the future, but “no time soon”.
I told the other Player, once it looked like there might be some kind of dating or something starting, that there was past history that could bubble up ICly in the future, and asked her if she wanted me to tell her in case it might trigger her (mostly thinking if there was an IC revelation that he was a dad). She said she just didn’t want any love triangles, and I told her that I wouldn’t do that, if he decided to get back with old flame, I’d let her know OOCly and her preference would be an IC breakup but thought that was fun RP. But at the time, I’d already told the first Player that my character was not pursuing hers, and he was ICly going to see what developed (if anything) with the other character.
That completely changed once Player 1 found out that the other person was Player 2, because of their past history on another MUSH.

Yeah, that was 100% my takeaway from this, if I decide to stick around the hobby.
The other player in question described herself as more of a PBF player than a MUSHer, and said that she really likes to have a solid framework of where things are going to go, while I tend to prefer things organically. I think that, as much as anything, was part of the issue here. She was initially fixed in this “they aren’t a couple now, they are friends who had a fling” mindset, and didn’t change her mind until my character had already started showing an interest in a different character. At which point I told her that I wasn’t going to tell that player that their storyline would have an expiration point. I didn’t think that was fair.
Anyway. Yeah, lesson learned. Even if people try to push to plan things out OOCly, just let things happen organically ICly.

If the headwiz had told me that it was relevant to what she wanted to decide about her game and asked for them, I’d have likely been willing to provide her (and her alone) with the Discord logs that delve a lot more into the literal “I feel like I am coming in second to this same player again and I don’t like it”. That would have been a more controlled environment and if she asked then I’d have assumed it actually made a difference. If she had the info she needed from the other conversations, then it wouldn’t have required her reading about another game’s drama. At least, that was my logic at the time.
So two different signals about how to handle two different pieces of content.
Since it’s been brought up enough, and I’ll stick to my own thread, here’s the page log from The Pack. It doesn’t go back to the beginning of the conversation due to time passage, and after the player requested switching to Discord I did, and so any further OOC communication was there. I’ll note that I specifically disclosed prior history to the player as soon as I recognized her Discord handle, so I wasn’t trying to hide anything.
I’ll summarize before the start of the page convo - we were in the “hook establishing” phase. Her character was a country singer who was a single mom, mine was a rodeo star. We talked about the idea of them having met up while both on the road a few years back. Did a scene, then she suggested that maybe they had a fling on the tour. And then floated the idea to me that my PC would be the father of her PC’s daughter, which she had yet to really determine parentage for. I said I’d consider it based around how the RP went because that’s pretty weighty, and we both felt each other out in some subsequent scenes.
What’s missing from right before the start of the log is some more of her asserting what I reference later as her wanting to “keep her options open” because it was a new game, and she wanted to take some time to decide who she wanted to do a romance plot with. You can see some statements throughout this conversation though referencing back to that.
At the end of the day, the Discord log has much of the same conversation - these two characters had an established past romance that led to story in the present about how both of them look regretfully towards the past and “what could have been”.
Anyway, enough editorializing. I’ll let folks draw the rest of their conclusions if they want to read it.
Ok, getting told it is too many characters, so I’ll try in its own post, and if not, figure out how to do it some other way.

I was a player who was banned from The Pack because I set up a background former romance with Female A who said it should not be a present day romance, and then got upset when my character showed an interest in Female B in the present.
I have a whole thread unto my own, though, separate from this, but have been told repeatedly that responding to people who ask questions or make references to me is bad form, so this is my last response to anything at all.
(Unless someone actually wants to see the logs and draw their own independent conclusion about the “timelines”, but I’d do that on my own thread so as not to cause any more confusion.)

No. I am talking about before any rep has been established. I mean narrative in a more limited sense, as in the narrative of a specific situation. It only takes a few situations to declare something a pattern, and if either (or both) of those situations aren’t accurate, but don’t get refuted, AND they also serve to prop each other up, well then there you have your pattern, which is wholly irrefutable.
It’s neither here nor there, but it’s how it works. It’s how Enrico Palazzo gets credit for saving the Queen, because enough repetition of something makes it true.

All of this being said - absolutely zero reason for Cobalt or anyone else to go to another forum to defend themselves against straight up lies. Not worth the energy, most of the folks advancing conjecture have their minds fully made up, and are just using the question form for a slim layer of accountability to say “I didn’t say that, I asked if it was possible.”
And that just feeds in, like above, to the “We have a report that Person A said Person B eats poop” repeated report, without ever addressing the accuracy of the poop eating itself.
Fair enough. I was just answering points that were raised, but I’m happy to see this having run its course. Last thing I want to do is cause anyone any more trauma.
I took ownership for the things I needed to take ownership for and clarified the things I wanted to clarify.
This has been fruitful in the sense that I appreciate the feedback. It helps me to understand what happened and what I can do differently in the future if I decide to continue in the hobby.

It was hard to detach that from the mindset of the character, although I should have sensed that and overruled that as a player for greater consideration of the other players involved. But I did as soon as it was mentioned to me OOCly.
I appreciate the comment on my RP - I’d like to think I am a decent role player, and certainly want to avoid anything resembling creeper tendencies. In this case, with the broader context of SM’s lingering discomfort from a previously floated background idea, I can totally see in hindsight how it was interpreted that way.

Just to clarify chronology a bit here, I was receiving (unprompted) feedback from other players during the scene that they found it funny and entertaining. That’s what I was referring to above. I didn’t seek out any validation had and no idea at the time that anyone was upset by it. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the scene, and my character was just comments like “Objectively speaking, he is a rather aesthetically appealing Terran specimen.” and “You removed (your shirt) in an effort to attract the attention of females, I presumed, in a primitive display of coloration.”
It was not until several weeks later that I received any OOC comment from SM at all about anything of the RP, at which point I immediately ceased RPing with or about that character at SM’s request without argument or seeking external opinion. I even had to push off another character OOCly who brought up conversation about that character’s doings to respect that, because I wanted to make sure I was adhering to SM’s request.
Ultimately, I stopped logging into the game shortly after that conversation (not making any kind of dramatic exit or anything, I just stopped logging in) until another player pinged me on Discord and told me that they missed my RP. That’s when I made a brief return, played in a scene or two, and ultimately left because the last thing I wanted to do was make anyone uncomfortable.
I don’t really want to keep going back and forth on this, because I’ve clearly had my takeaways here and lessons to apply in the future, and I don’t want to subject anyone else to dissection this drama, but I did want to clarify that point. If someone asks me to change gears, I change gears, and I don’t ask questions as to why.
No one individual’s RP or story should ever cross into a point where it bothers another player. Period.

Yeah. Certainly sound advice. It’s not really something that I do particularly often, honestly, but easy enough to just avoid entirely so there is no misunderstanding at all.

I very much did not intend for that, and will be rather careful going forward if I RP elsewhere knowing that’s what got conveyed. That is certainly something very real and very uncomfortable, and would have made far more sense to me as something objectionable; I also understand why the player would have felt less comfortable mentioning those.
I’d like to think that I could learn from my mistakes, so I do appreciate the feedback.

Fair point. Like I said at the time, it was less refusal and more “I’d rather not embroil the other players if it’s not a big deal”. It was clearly a bigger deal than I read from the scene.

I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching since this happened. Both immediately after, and I’ve revisited it again. I 100% believe that communication is paramount, and it’s clear that communication here led to the situation. I don’t want to generate more drama for this, but in terms of my personal exploration of what I can do differently, I was wondering if you would be willing, if I were to send you the log of the conversation at this point (I’d do my best to redact the conversations about other games as much as I could), if you would be willing to look at it, and if you can see where it is that I went wrong in trying to explain the situation, help me to understand it?
I realize that is a big ask, and you certainly owe me nothing. And would totally understand if you say no, you don’t want to deal with this drama at all anymore. But I do want to see how I could have approached it differently, how I could have better articulated where I was, and better acted based around what I’d communicated with the other player.
Either which way, I won’t comment again on this thread (as noted) and I don’t think this really rises to the level of requiring its own thread. I’m not the one who brought me into the Macha thread, and I’m certainly more than happy to see myself out of it.
