@GF one of my favorite pieces of someone doing something for verisimilitude is the show Deadwood. They replaced all the curse words with modern day curse words, because actual old western curses would sound really tame to us, and they wanted to evoke the same feelings, vs be historically accurate.
-
@GF - I do get what you mean but this works on the presumption that my character wouldn’t understand their accent though. My character may have grown up around it, but I as a player have no way of knowing what they are saying.

I would actually put up with a typed accent from someone who can RP with the Shakespearean dramatic skill and textual ‘vocal’ control of any of the Deadwood players.
But nobody who’s ever done a typed accent is this, alas.
-
I would love to see some examples of what y’all are talking about because this seems like some really weird gatekeeping. Like for real you cannot understand what the words typed mean?
-
@shit-piss-love The one example that really stands out to me is no longer available (game long closed, site shut down). But I swear it was the written equivalent of Merida in this:

I’m glum about a circumstance that I can’t really talk about with anyone and it’s just one of those things where I wish I had some no-judgment RP therapist to vent at. I feel dumb about it, but then also angry and hurt and offended and sad and scared/anxious. The answer is to walk away, but I don’t want to walk away. Meh. I’ll get over it.
hey, hey. pick me. i no longer RP, but i used to so i get things. i am also non-judgey, i swear. and i make a good therapist, i’ve been told!
no, pick me! @Tez says I give good advice

@shit-piss-love I don’t have an example to offer, but yes… ish. I cannot just read the pose and understand it. I have to stop and parse each word. So technically I can read it, but I can’t read it just like a regular pose. I’m not talkin’ about dropping some Gs or whatever, but the heavy ones.

@shit-piss-love i cannae unnerstan wut yer typin owt n druther nae try n figger it owt, druther jest arpee wiv summin elth

@shit-piss-love - I’d feel horrible if someone then went to every scene they are currently in, did ctrl + F and copy pasted what I submitted to work out it was either their RPed accent in dialogue I was peeving on, or using as an example.
In my own case, the dyslexia triggers more-so when the first and last letter is replaced with a ’ as I can’t work out what it says. So then I have to copy and paste the dialogue into notepad, fill in the blanks. Re-read it.
Pretty much everything @farfalla said. I have to stop and parse each word, work it out. Well now I’ve forgotten context, so I am scrolling back up to read and just end up in a frustrated loop.

Augh. Decades ago, we had a player on LegendMUD who insisted on writing like that – also OOC.

I mean this example is clearly awful but does this actually happen in the wild? The worst I’ve seen are people dropping Gs to communicate a colloquial brogue, and the occasional “dinnae” or something which has always felt cringey to me but I can grok their meaning.

It definitely used to happen a lot more regularly. Tbh, I used to be guilty of it in my misspent youth, and I know I’m not the ONLY ONE.
We all have to live with our pasts. With our regrets.

@shit-piss-love Again, yes.
eta: And I know it’s not the same one @KarmaBum is referring to because they weren’t on that game.

Almost every game I’ve been on someone types an ‘accent’. And it is almost exactly like Karma typed it. Tweaked to fit whatever accent they are doing. The accent typing is probably one of the bigger reasons I prefer original settings. Less likely to have those accents.
-
@KarmaBum do i get a gold sticker for being able to read that without a problem? XD
-
@Roz @KarmaBum @Snackness @icanbeyourmuse
Well I stand corrected. That would bug me too if I saw it.
So I’ve played characters in the past that I felt had strong accents, though usually what I would do is maybe drop some Gs or whatever but mostly I’d try to convey foreign-ness by playing subtly with grammar and sentence structure that was a few degrees off the western english norm. Is that as bad?
-
@shit-piss-love That doesn’t bother me. If I can read the dialog and get the gist without having to squint at it, I’m pretty content.

Not at all. I find clever use of sentence structure and whatnot to be far more effective at actually indicating accent in my ear.

This. Or even just “he says in a heavy accent.”
I promise, if you tell me your PC has a deep southern drawl, I’ll imagine it that way. But if folks keep posin a’ me n sech a way as i cannae even unnerstan wtf yo aiccent is even upposed t’be, you are ruining my immersion, and I am going to ruin yours by not playing with you ever again.
