How to Greet a Roster Player

@Solstice There’s no good way to say “hey we used to bang” without sounding like a huge creep.
There’s really not.
-
@farfalla ‘Our characters had a romantic-inclined relationship if you want to continue or discuss it, let me know’ implies, at least.
One belated note: Keeping up the ‘check in’ AFTER the ‘newness’ wears off is good too. This ties a little into my peeve about @RS and the people who do 1 or 2 scenes those first couple weeks then basically never again.

One nice thing about folks in your org is that you can use the org channel there to start off the hellos, which I think may be a little less overwhelming than immediate pages! I feel okay saying hi to someone pretty immediately on an org channel. For pages, I try to not immediately leap on them as soon as they connect, but at least give them a few minutes to get settled and whatnot. But then, yeah, I’ll page, say hello, all that jazz.
For connections that aren’t org-based, it can be trickier. Good friendships? Yeah, absolutely, I’ll reach out. Sexual and/or romantic connections? Very situationally dependent. If it was just characters hooking up a few times and nothing beyond that, I’ll generally not say anything. If it was more involved than that, like a serious, ongoing connection? I’ll try to just broach it as respectfully as possible, letting the new player know there was a history, but giving them the opportunity to basically opt in or out of hearing about it. I also might wait a little longer than IMMEDIATELY when a character comes off the roster for that sort of conversation. It really just depends.
-
@Roz I find that people logging in the first time aren’t always on the org channel, somehow?? But yes I also wait at least a couple of minutes before I page.
-
@farfalla From my experience picking up a truly embarassing number of rosters, all of the org channels are turned off. I think it must be part of the wipe from the previous time the roster was played.
-
@Snackness Makes sense. Usually they find their way to the channel but I’ve greeted some people via page that had no idea it existed.

I think they SHOULD be codedly, I remember them making that update at one point, although especially recently with the roster weirdness having to be done by hand, I bet that wasn’t turned on automatically. But yeah I’ll check the channel list to make sure first.
-
My recent experience: I just picked up my second roster ever, and this is the first time I did not have an army of prior connections and orgs to draw upon. She is a bit of a blank slate in every way. Sent a mail and IC messenger to house leadership, but aside from a brief page chat with HoH, it’s been pretty quiet. A hello and some outreach is great and I’d definitely feel fuzzier with one, but I am also very aware that sometimes the other players just don’t have the bandwidth or time to make moves or commit to anything. Have to strike a balance, there, between eagerness to get involved and patience with everyone around me.
I am going to keep at it, hopefully without being a nuisance in the process, and make new connections that will fulfill me in the meanwhile. May even post something in OOC Stuff seeking connections. To Snackness’ point, it definitely took a while playing in Arx for me to build the confidence up to reach out like that, though.
-
It always takes me 2+ days to remember how to turn channels on so a page is nice.
-
It’s nice when HoH/Voice sends a welcome back to the city messenger with a little bit of “start-up” silver.
-
I am normally an advocate for not expecting extra work from IC leaders, but greeting new people is the one thing I feel is definitely my responsibility. I also enjoy it! It’s wild to me that org leaders aren’t regularly doing that. Though I guess to be fair my org is very small.
I’m glad to know most people like being greeting. I sometimes worry I’m bothering people so now I can greet without fear. So if you join the King’s Own you can look forward to an enthusiastic hello. And some silver, for @helvetica.

Oh, hey, I didn’t know this was an option.
Def greet my new roster with silver, please.

I feel like often the experiences with roster characters is so scatter shot. Sometimes it goes really well, and sometimes it goes…not great. I’ve personally had mixed results, and a large part of that has to do with who is in the main org your character is apart of.
Is their leaders active?
Are they inclusive?
Does the character have decent connections?
Was the roster ever really played previously?
Did the last player leave notes?
Is their secret even relevant these days?Depending on how you would answer those questions, I think often times will make or break a roster character being hung onto or being hung up or idled out. I once had a character for all of maybe…a few hours? The page seemed interesting, but everything around them once I got the character was not great. So I think often times it really varies, and with that, I think a lot of that fall upon just how active are the org the character is apart of. Is that the case every time? Of course not, but I do often see it as one of the bigger reasons why it doesn’t.
-
I used to joke that if Arx retained the @mail between characters that Eiran Laurent would just be a stream of me being like “Hello! This is Cristoph and I…” blah blah blah variations of this, from me trying to catch people. Laurent doesn’t really have much in the way of any rosters for people to pick up anymore, so I’m not going through this so much.
But I’m just burned out on greeting people and never getting a response. So many Eirans, Klauseseses, Cassandras. Or reaching out and seeing when they wanted a scene to get them settled in and getting nothing.
So I think sometimes when you run into that, sometimes it’s just a very tired person that is themselves tired of being silently rejected. I don’t know if there’s a good solution there.
Anyone looking at this thread and commenting to find solutions for the one problem is probably not the kind of player that would ignore a proactive org leader, lol.
-
@tsar Well this is more effort than I give, lol. I just… wait until they’re on and page them. Then I make sure they have a room, armor, keys, etc.
-
Damned if you page as it can be overwhelming.
Damned if you don’t as you neglect them.
But this is all useful to read, I guess to break this down in 2 sections for interactions on my behalf.
Are you in the org?
When I get a chance a check on the channel if on it, otherwise a page welcoming on in. General check in, how’s life. You know, small talk. Ask if there were anything in particular they wanted to do with the character. In case they already have a whole idea and then how I can help facilitate that if appropriate or applicable.
Then a general check if they have the materials, resources, silver or even the contact to do the above.
Did we previously RP?
Only if there is an OOC post inviting such, will drop a mail with myself copied in (so I can recycle it. Sorry/not sorry.). Will focus it on the “what was the hook here” and basically leave it entirely in their court. Had some absolutely wonderful success with this, better than expected. Maybe 80% of the time no reply but it’s fine. I did my bit.

lol I just figured they might want to play with me if they joined the same org! I discovered over time, sometimes they do not.

Oh gosh, the amount of people that I have tried to reach out to for some rosters only to get nothing back is very high.
Also: Some of the people who I have the richest backstory with are rosters that tend to turn over frequently, and it gets… Hard. To have the exact same explanatory PREVIOUSLY, ON YOUR CHARACTER… RP when it’s like, the fifth time in a year.
I can’t fathom how much more difficult that must be for people in leadership roles.
Do I still have those scenes? Absolutely. I want people to stick, and have a good time. Genuinely. Every time.
Does it take a toll? Absolutely.

I’M SORRY, I MISS HER.

For Redrain, I have a welcome @mail that changes a little dependent on whether they are a roster or a new OC. The only real change with that is about room arrangements because rosters tend to log into their room, while I have to home-set OCs. It is this:
*Welcome aboard Person!
Your room is the Nifty Bedroom in the Dreamers Hall, which is probably where you connected. There is a villa/ward map located here, for help getting around, as well as some tabs for family trees and fealty chain: (link to spreadsheet) - You will get a weekly allowance that is already set up the bank for you as well.
We have a family/fealty channel called, unsurprisingly, Redrain. You can check out ‘clist’ to see what channels you already may be on and their subscription status (yes, no, muted) - comlist will show the short list of what channels you’re subscribed to and their aliases, if assigned.
Also check out: @bb - this lists all the possible @bboards you can subscribe to, as well as if you are subscribed or not. Help @bb has further info. The News @bb is a good one to add if it’s not on your list already, especially with recent game changes.
House Redrain has a contract with the Whisper House - I can send more info on that if/when you might want the details.
If you are not all that familiar with Redrain, there are a few lore files that might help: Lore Redrain - Lore Redrain Fashion - Lore Principles of the Great Houses. Those three are pretty great! You can find more lore info using lore/search - for example, lore/search shamanism will list the files that reference that particular topic.
The House summary is available on the game via ‘@org redrain’ or on the web at https://play.arxgame.org/topics/org/14/ – @family Person will show you Person’s (perhaps obviously) familial relations.
Finally, this is a great file to read: help relationship continuity – in a nutshell, taking on a roster character has some leeway in regard to the rp done by the previous player(s).
(Note about additional orgs they may be in and who to contact, like Spirit Walkers)
Let us know if you need anything once you’ve got yourself settled and once again, welcome to Redrain!*
So that’s probably a lot, and more than some players need, but I figure that gets them a first ‘hello’ of sorts and then lets them settle in and then reach out when they are ready. Hopefully at least!
