I haven’t seen anyone mention the new Interview With The Vampire here yet but, despite the heavy review bombing from dipshits with nothing better to do, it has me hooked.
I really enjoy the new Louis, and find him to be both roughly 100x more interesting than “old dead slave owner” and also at the same time still true to the core of the old character who was at odds with everything and constantly questioned his world and nature. I also very much appreciate the more modern and much less ambiguous take on Louis and Lestat’s relationship and sexuality, and I’m excited to see how they move through the new timeline and what the other characters will look like.
Also, tho this almost goes without saying given the new bar recent releases have set, the production values are great and everything looks authentic and fantastic.

@Nynrose I thought they had good chemistry. The classic issue in these pairings is why when Matt gets attacked by ninjas or whatever, he doesn’t give Jen a call. What will the Hand do, shoot arrows at her?

I’m not saying it couldn’t have a cameo like that. I’m just saying that this is a fan-tizied cast list and has no basis in reality as to what the actual casting is. Sure, we could have some of that, or perhaps even all of it if, but at this point in time the only confirmed people on that list are Kingpin, Matt, and Echo. None of the other chracters have been cast, and at least in the case of Deborah Woll, she has said she hasn’t even been approached.
Now, yes, that could change. But this image does not represent fact as it stands now, and I was just trying to temper the excitement of people because it just isn’t reality.

I have had no exposure to Anne Rice other than the original Interview movie and got shitballs high with some friends to mercilessly schlockfest Queen of the Damned a couple times.
The original Interview suffered from my general disinterest in Vampire fiction at the time as well as a general boredom with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in those roles.
My wife is a longtime fan (plus she did some study with Eric Bogosian in the past so this is a real draw for her) and I have a tendency to ride along and watch – I was shocked at how much I like this.
The casting decisions felt like they had real, interesting story consequences, the New Orleans setting feels familiar without being hacky and the decision to queer-code the story as much as they did likewise makes me happy.
And that’s all before we get to the performances. Jacob Anderson took a character that could have been full and makes him compelling, Lestat manages to avoid being obnoxiously hammy, and again, Bogosian did way more than show up.
This was a show I did not expect to like this much, but here we are.

Holy shit, Andor. This has been the slowest-building show I’ve seen since the Expanse but damn I love it every bit as much.
Another thing, I didn’t expect them to make good on the promise of endless Star Wars media permutations but again, here we are.

@SpaceKhomeini Andor is so enjoyable to me because it’s the first time we’ve gotten to actually just… have us sit down and experience the vibe of people living in the Galaxy.

@SpaceKhomeini Andor gave me cyberpunk vibes from the first five minutes and it hasn’t failed that general feel since.
The glimpses it gives of what it’s like to be part of the Empire’s bureaucratic engine, to work as an officer in that kind of oppressive, passive-aggressive environment of mid-level ranked mini-tyrants competing for a larger slice of the pie as people on the ground try to live their lives works on every level.
That’s not to say I don’t appreciate a good lightsaber duel, mind you. But this, too, adds a lot of depth to the setting.
It’s also the reason I feel shows don’t need to move to different eras of the Star Wars universe since the material is exhausted. They still can, but there are many more takes we haven’t seen in the 30-40 years between Palpatine’s rise and uh, Palpatine’s other rise.

i really do hope Andor has a plot line where we see a schism between the rebels who think the empire is a natural development of the corrupt oligarchic republic and those who simply want it back.
Not just Saw’s tactics, but a faction that gets ideologically sold out. That would be some next level shit.

Hah, that reminds me of a line from Pitch Meeting on YouTube (I’m paraphrasing) when he was doing The Phantom Menace, and he joked about the trade federation, tariffs, blockades etc being part of the opening scrawl. “That’s what kids want to see! Politics!”

For real though, I’ve been semi-joking for years about getting a piece of Star Wars media where it’s got scenes of pissed-off and paranoid Imperial bureaucrats arguing and jostling for budget funding.
The moment ep 4 of this aired my sister texted me asking me if I got a writing gig and didn’t tell anyone.

@Alamias It’s possible that Deborah Woll has said she hasn’t been approached because if she has, and they’re waiting to reveal that information, she can’t say whether or not she has contractually. Will Wheaton also said he wouldn’t be in Picard for a long time, but that if he WERE approached, he’d gladly accept the role. And lo - he was in the last episode of the 2nd season.

@Nynrose The best part about Wheaton being kept secret was how I, and everyone I know, were livid that he wasn’t mentioned in the Picard S3 promo ads, which… yeah. Wheaton and Crosby absolutely should be in it. But still, showing up in that last episode got us all like ‘… alright, we still want him in S3, but this gives Wesley a satisfying exit, if not’.
… unrelated, but we are also annoyed that Admiral Sheer Fucking Hubris from S1 wasn’t Janeway.

The final season of His Dark Materials is almost here.
I loved the first two seasons. It’s based on a children’s book series, so I mainly watched Season One for nostalgia’s sake, but the second was so good it made me want to reread the books all over again.
It’s a critically underrated fantasy series IMO and for those of you with kids at home, you could also watch it with them as it’s relatively child-friendly. (On the same level as Sandman or the Harry Potter series for example; i.e. there’s still some scary stuff, but no rape and murder-birth scenes or whatever.)
It’s also free to watch on BBC iPlayer if you’re either in the UK or using a VPN.

i would not describe sandman as child-friendly idk. i guess i did originally read the comics starting sometime like middle school maybe. but harry potter and his dark materials were works written for kids or young adults, so probably a bit different.
