@Roz I think its the same reason that so many great stage and screen characters smoke, and the same reason @Pavel mentioned – it’s a great thing to do with your hands. You can alter how it’s done to indicate emotion, distraction, pain, or something else, and it’s something to //do//.
I remember hearing somewhere that people on stakeouts or casing a joint often smoke, because no one questions (questioned?) a smoker standing outside in front of a building, but if you’re lingering around doing nothing, it’s suspicious.

@Roadspike
A few other reasons why smoking is handy for stakeouts:- Nicotine works as a stimulant that’s easier to maintain than coffee, with fewer trips to the bathroom needed
- It works to keep hunger pangs to a minimum, which means even fewer bathroom trips and support mechanics for long hours
- By covering the “cherry” you can cut the visual profile down to nearly nothing, although the smell is sometimes a problem
- Most smokers ignore other smokers unless they need a light
- You can use a cigarette balanced between two fingers lengthwise to keep yourself awake; the cigarette, upon burning down, scorches into the meat of the finger and jolts someone awake
- It’s an easy reason to hang out by loading docks, security doors, and major entryways, while spare-changing will draw unwanted attention
To name a few reasons of the many.
-
I used to date a smoker and while I never smoked myself, I kinda enjoyed the culture of it.
Then I married him and he quit
-
One of my favorite, most fun characters I ever RPed was my bulldog prosecutor lady who was an unrepentant chain smoker.

We are obviously overlooking the main reason to play a smoker… the ability to set your annoyance’s stuff on fire.
Right?
Is this just me?
-
I played smokers because that was during the time where I was still smoking myself. And man…I really miss smoking and RPing sometimes. It really helped me think. Holding a pen while I construct a pose just isn’t the same.
-
@Testament Yeah, I am with you on this one. I used to RP smoking all the time as a former smoker. Now I find that RPing smoking is one of the few things that gives me big cravings again so I just stopped, but I kinda miss RPing about it, weirdly.
-
I loved RPing smokers but fuckin’ hated smoking cigarettes the few times I gave them a try as an adult, so I was genuinely baffled the entire time even as I had fun with it.
truly, we are a diverse lot, lol.

Connecting and reconnecting with people

I saw a tweet today about the historic MUD genre and laughed.
I think people don’t know that we’re still around.
-
@Kestrel I was there for this groundbreaking development in online fuckery and even friends, of a sort, with Mr_Bungle, and quite good friends with the guy who responded to the whole thing by coding objects so you could text-assault people anywhere on the MOO with a two-word command.
We are historic indeed.
-
Getting past inertia/nerves and just reaching out to ask people if they want to RP
-
Seeing friends who were mistreated on other games go on to start their own creative projects, and join staff teams where their labour is appreciated & admired, gives me immense contact joy.
-
made my whole gd night.
