PBs frustrate me. I write a character description and then I have to go to the internet to find someone famous enough that matches the description I wrote. And then I’m typically not allowed to use pictures of anyone else.
I’m here for the words. They’re delicious and crunchy.
I guess this speaks to my point? If you don’t like them, you shouldn’t feel like you’re obliged to find one!
And @arkandel I disagree completely, but to each their own. As a VI player though, the whole what is even the point of a description thing feels kind of exclusionary. But I also understand you about how including outfits as part of a desc is annoying, which is why I favor games where I can describe clothes separately and wear them!
@Pavel yes, that would be awful, lol -

… except you’re not. You can write a description without finding a picture.

An average human of average body shape. They got a face of all the usually required parts that one tends to associate with a face, which are neither unsightly or unique. They are also wearing clothing some variety depending on the weather.

Outsource your descriptions to AI.
Write a character description for me for a Sci-Fi themed game for a 27 year old man who is quite tall. They have brown hair, a scar across their left eye. Their eyes are dark green and they have brown hair. A little bit of a beard so describe them similar to Charles Dance without saying his name.
“The 27-year-old man stands tall at over 6 feet, with a strong build and chiselled features. He has dark brown hair, with a hint of a beard on his jawline, giving him a rugged, yet refined look. A scar runs across his left eye, adding a hint of danger and mystery to his appearance. His dark green eyes are piercing, seeming to take in everything around him. Overall, he has the air of a confident and experienced individual, reminiscent of a seasoned leader.”

I mean, you just wrote a description right there.
-
@Pavel - You’re welcome to use it for your next character
-
@Whisky Hah, nah. I’ll just use my old Charles Dance inspired description.

I would like to challenge this. You might have the most average, middle of the road person in the world, but that person will still have a collection of features you can identify and put to words that is unique to them. If describing an utterly unremarkable character, I break it down into hair color/style, eyes, skin tone, body type, and movement, as every person possesses some combination of these. And if they don’t, that’s worth remarking on.
or just go with @Whisky’s idea if you can’t be bothered, that desc was good! -

Then you’re in charge of writing all descs.

I’m down!

Generic blob person, I’m all down for normalizing this.
-
I used to be able to write descs, before I took an arrow to the knee. Thank goodness for roster games, I’d be in trouble without.
-
@IoleRae Is it something that just happens to us as we age? We get less able to write a paragraph of abstract screed, but we can still type out reams of dialogue or verbiage in our RP?
-
I like writing descs.
Just of people, though. Places and things can get fucked.
-
@Pavel I can’t do either of these things. Maybe I’m in the wrong hobby.
-
I’m wayy more comfortable writing descs of places than I am writing them of people.
-
I think for me it might just be lazy. Anything that smells like homework, I don’t wanna do it for fun. I have far more limited time than I used to for mush pursuits (to be fair, I could make more time), so I want to spend that time doing active things. Some of the stuff I need to do (most of it, really) doesn’t really need sustained effort, so it can be done and I don’t feel like I wasted too much precious “brain on” time on it. Generating new backgrounds / descriptions…it’s not a lot of work, but it SEEMS like a lot of work.
There’s also the possible-rejection=paralysis thing, with descs being your first impression on people. I’m sure that factors in, too.
-
@IoleRae Oooh. All very good points, something I shall need to consider more thoughtfully - and not at six am after a dozen cups of coffee.
