@Pavel said in Re: Dies Irae:

Another thing I’ve noticed is that some members of staff immediately jump on the defensive when someone makes an often justifiable complaint.

Yeah, can’t say I’m a fan of that. Especially when it’s defensiveness about code. I often joke that I’m a clinical psychologist who is hobby coding python here, but that’s exactly the case. I know I’m not going to be as good as bitMuse, Theno, Kumakun, Volund, etc. I definitely don’t need any white knighting on behalf.

“Well we’re in beta these things happen” is fine and good, but there’re repeated instances of players being unable to actually see each other, much less actually RP together.

This is such a weird bug. There’s this one and that ooc room one where going if from the ooc room will occasionally keep your account linked to the ooc room while your puppet (in traditional MU terms, your bit) goes on to wherever it is you’re headed.

I’m definitely still working on both of these, but they’re real weird because there’s no discernible pattern as to when they happen. My weekends suck due to childcare stuff, but when I was looking at it on Friday I found a quirk in the character typeclass that stored a previous location attribute (used for commands like +return) using the same name as the location attribute (I just used “self.db.location”). The kicker is I can change this and it’ll just be a bunch of waiting until whatever random assortment of commands occurs that causes the bug to appear.

As for the other one, they have to be linked! Maybe! It’s also possible it’s a reality level thing. In hindsight I should have just created typeclasses for umbra rooms so stepping would just teleport you to another room with a different room type, but instead I made it place a tag on your character that changes what you can and can’t see. Then doubled down and did the same thing with fae stuff. I need to code review that one. I really want to get it to a state where there’s nothing super game-breaking so that it can be released. Then more people can make MUSHes to keep the hobby buoyed a bit.

So when a new person complains about that, and mentions their irritation at the round-a-bout way of fixing it, just say it’s being worked on and then shut up. You’re staff, if you’re whining on the Newbie channel, you’re doing it wrong.

It’s not only the newbie channel though, there’s a lot of immediate defensiveness in the Discord that just doesn’t need to happen, aside from that whole meme about what belongs on what channel. I feel like I say “not everything deserves more than an acknowledgement” more often than I should be, because there are full fledged arguments that occur and it drives me nuts.

It’s fine to just be like “thanks!” or “thanks.” It’s also fine to just say, “Ah, good suggestion! Sounds like it would be interesting.” even if you never plan to consider it. Also, like… In the instance that someone does aggravate you to the point that you get actually angry it’s far easier and less personally disruptive to just step away and ignore them than to keep the cycle going.

Not much to be done about it, though. At this point it feels like staff culture. Maybe a bit too defeatist, but – well.

I quit! I am going to continue working on the WoD20th code on my own, and I might run a Mage ttrpg using it, but no more staff at DI.

My main focus will be finishing up my Cyberpunk Red game.

I’m enjoying this game but the staff turnover got me like:

@catzilla I like my cat as well, I have fun with my folks. I hope whatever problems Bya spoke of come out in the open to be handled soon.

It’s sort of inevitable given the apparent lack of communication going on between staff, along with the sheer amount of making things up on the fly that I had seen during my brief sojourn there.

@Cygnus Why is that one a hard pass?

It removes a lot of drama surrounding ‘so n so is out to get me and killed me in a PrP!’ or ‘they don’t know the rules and it HAs to be rolled back’ sort of things when not-staff are ST’ing. And it’s not hard to get a quick round of ‘hey, this is going to be rough, do you consent to what happens in the scene’ before a group gets going.

@Taika I don’t mind the PRP thing actually, it’s that it’s the ONLY way you can get killed. Yes I want pvp to exist in MUSHes, there was a forked topic about it today actually. Crusade is a little extreme though lol

@Cygnus you don’t need to performatively go into the thread to comment on it, though. It’s not like they’re going to change that just for you.

@spiriferida I would never app after reading that house rule. But where else would I comment about it? Not a lot of forum posts about Dies Irae out there.

@Cygnus you just shrug and move on like the rest of us do when a game makes a perfectly reasonable decision that isn’t to our tastes, maybe

@Cygnus okay? It’s weird you went down a list of games and went “I have a long and detailed list of frustrations with this game and it’s runner,” “this game enables a transphobe and sex pest”, “no pvp :(”

It’s a silly criticism compared to the other ones. I get you’re looking for a game but cmon

@spiriferida how is it weird to not like the current games out there for different reasons? You’re right that this one is less specific and more just a bad impression, but why are you policing what I can and can’t say on a public forum about criticizing MU*s? THAT is weird

@Cygnus it’s not weird to dislike em, I’m just rolling my eyes at how you went into it. I’ll leave it there cause it’s off topic for this thread and you’ve made your opinion clear elsewhere that you can’t imagine having fun in a non pvp game and you can continue arguing it as much as you like there.

This game seems to have been all but completely abandoned by staff and players.

It was fun while it lasted but seemed to suffer from revolving door of staff and then piling multiple spheres on the replacement staff.

Yeah, staff churn & burn seems high on the list of reasons games die. Even if we eliminate staff churn caused by toxic behavior, I still believe it’s high on the list. I’ve seen plenty of games with no major toxic issues die to burnout.

@MisterBoring I heard along the grapevine that there was some behind the scenes troubles too. What exactly it was, I do not know. But, at least a small handful of staff left because of it. 🤷

From my experience there was a lot of power grabbing and control issues with nothing to show for it. A whole lot of NOs from the sphere lead, then not a single scene ran or plot introduced for the sphere.

The game had sky high potential and almost all of it was ultimately wasted. Vamp sphere seemed to have the best go of it towards the end, but it faded out pretty quickly.

Personally it was crushing to see this game fade out so quickly. It could have been really fun.

2/10 - Would NOT recommend running a game without a head staff. The idea of that is nice but in practice, without the right people there (as opposed to: anyone who is who is willing to do the job), it blows chunks a lot - and instead of one strong lead (which is rare enough) you need one for every sphere. Pipe dream.

I don’t think there was anything too major - at least from what I observed. I just think it was normal stuff and people weren’t invested in the game enough to want to deal with it. It never really got off the ground. So they either quit or quiet quit. On staff and player side. And the game just died.

Of course, there could also have been major drama that wasn’t made public to players or other staff.
