The Inherent Heresy of the Cubrule

Bored at work so I’m here to start a debate. Or a fight, whichever comes first. So I’m just going to leave this here.
Anyone that is going to sit here and tell me that ravioli is a type of sandwich is wrong, and you can’t tell me otherwise.
-
There is only 1 authority on the sandwich and that is the Right Honourable 11th Earl of Sandwich John Edward Hollister Montagu. He who’s descendent invented the sandwich.
A while ago, after getting into a discussion at work as a colleague stated that to be classed as a sandwich it required butter - I emailed him. A fine use of Parliamentary time if anything. Annoyingly I can’t find the email now since I didn’t use my legit inbox because that would be stupid.
But if I remember right he stated that historically it was simply anything between 2 pieces of bread and there was no specification on butter, mayonnaise or ketchup used. Therefore.
Hotdog = Sandwich
Ravioli = Not -
The larger issue that I find is there is a push for some kind of ‘grand unification theory’ about what is and is not a sandwich. Is the sandwich the progenitor that which all others are derived from? And if so, that does mean that toast is a sub-class of sandwich? Does that still make it a ‘type’ of sandwich while still being considered is own entity? Because under that thinking, sushi is toast, and therefore, a type of sandwich.
And I’m unsure if my mind will allow me to accept that kind of outcome.
-
@Testament absolutely not. toast came before sandwich, i am pretty sure and refuse to actually look up. besides ‘toast’ doesn’t imply that anything is ‘sandwiched’ between bread. toast implies the way in which you cooked the bread, much like roast can imply a big hunk of roasted beef but you can also have roasted broccoli.
so you can have a toasted sandwich, etc, but toast isn’t a category of type of food. just the cooking method!
-
@Meg Keep in mind, by the logic of the cuberule, a steak is also a salad.
For the sake of clarity, I have met people who consider open-faced sandwiches as ‘toast’, even though the the bread is not toasted. With the argument that it is not condition and texture of the bread that makes it toast, but rather the fact that single piece of bread is used. To these people, and I would consider these people wrong, toast is considered multiple things; both the status of the bread’s state and by the fact that only one piece is used. That is, by their definition, toast.
I’m unsure of the timeline of which came before, toast or sandwich, but I would assume it was the single piece of the bread as well. Which, I suppose if that’s true, toast is the proto-sandwich. Which begs the larger question; is everything else just varying forms of toast?

@Meg said in The Inherent Heresy of the Cubrule:
so you can have a toasted sandwich, etc, but toast isn’t a category of type of food. just the cooking method!
Prove to me that a toaster isn’t an interdimensional portal that replaces bread-particles with toast-particles.
Then we can talk.
-
Oh wait is this cuberule thing why I have a friend that insists food is either a curry or a salad based on wetness?
-
@Whisky Probably the same kind of person that tells you stew is just wet salad.
-
@Testament omg, those people are so wrong. ask them how they’d feel if someone asked if they wanted toast and then someone just gave them a fucking random, untoasted piece of bread. that’d be ridiculous!
@KarmaBum i mean, i can’t prove anything. who even says if we aren’t like, all part of a video game. but you can like just look in the toaster and watch your toast toast?
the word toast is funny.
-
@Testament Stew is wet so it is a curry
-
Ravioli is a dumpling, not a sandwich.
-
i’m gonna go order a vanilla soy latte, aka my three bean soup.
-
@Meg actually didn’t say, I just fixed it, in The Inherent Heresy of the Cubrule:
look in the toaster and watch your
toast toastbread particles be transported across the vastness of space and time?Indeed!
-
@Herja But is a pop-tart ravioli. And if it is, does that mean that all types of ravioli are just calzones. Which would imply that they too, are sandwiches.
-
@Meg Is it cold? Might be a gazpacho.
-
@Whisky Would all soup be thick drinks if you’re brave enough? You don’t need a bowl or spoon, they’re just convenient. Is tomato soup just hot V8? Or does soup need to have stuff in it to be soup? That does make me wonder then if boba is soup.
-
um the mods here SPECIFICALLY SAID they didn’t want POLITICAL ARGUMENTS–
-
I’m so confused and delighted right now.
Let me throw some tinder on this fire…Pop Tart, toasted or cold from the foil?
If you say toasted you are incorrect
-
@Snackness cold isn’t wrong, per se, but it’s just not the same as the deliciousness that is a nice sugar-coated strawberry poptart, heated up.
honestly, the answer is ‘what is the toppinp’. because frosting = cold, sugar = heated up.
