    • Listing for MUs

So the question comes up on occasion asking what MUs are out there. There are a few options for lists that are fairly MUD heavy and then some like ares central, which is great, but only for aresmush games and something similar for evennia.

I’ve put together a listing site that I hope might find some use. The list is freely accessible, but I do ask for a login for posting and editing listings. Its focus is roleplay heavy games, regardless of codebase.

You can find it here: https://mustard.mythicus.net

If you have any questions or encounter any problems, let me know!

    • Glitch's Spotty History

If there’s a name here, it’s because it had enough of an impact on me that I remembered it in the moment. I do not keep extensive logs nor have the incredible steel-trap memory of some of the others here, so there have been a lot more, but these are some highlights in no particular order.

      Current
      City of Glass: Crow, Lucas

      Former
      Castle D’Image: Aidan
Haunted Memories: Some mages, none memorable
      Darkwater (1 or 2?): Jacob
      Reno: Jonathan
      The Reach: Rome, Michael, others
      Arx: Leo, Olin, others
      Wyrdhold: Salamander

Many minor appearances on most WoD MUs.

@Jennkryst When we went with 18+, the idea was that it would be clear we were looking for adults, not barely legal catholic high school girls with a tempter agenda in demon.

But you’re right in that we changed the rules. So there’s that.

@Kumakun The style is very cool. Also, self-plug, but I started a mu* listing site that is non-specific to codebase but focused on RP games, if you wanted to add yours: https://mustard.mythicus.net

    • RE: Mod Voice

I very much dislike the idea of a separate mod account. Even with attaching a name, it is false separation and I feel it very easily dilutes accountability.

Honestly, my first thought is that, to mod, you cannot behave as confrontationally, familiarly or annoyingly as you would as a general community member. I do not mean to say you cannot have opinions, but whether you’re using your main account or some mod exclusive account, you have power on this forum. By accepting the position, I feel you also have a responsibility to act with more decorum. If you cannot accept that, then do not mod. Not because you’re a bad person, but because not everyone is oriented toward what the position requires (obviously just my opinion of the position requirements).

So my real suggestion is, if you’re a mod and you’re about to post something that is not mod-related, the standard for your tone needs to be higher.

@L-B-Heuschkel Really? My impression was everyone recognizing that some people prefer or require async, but still wished to express their own feelings and views on it. Also, I don’t see how having both is a mutually exclusive proposition.

So the decision is fine and I don’t care to pick at MSB or get involved with any of it, but this is definitely more active moderation. The continuation of any of those conversations wouldn’t have been out of line from the posted rules and a more hands off approach.

If you want to adjust the tone of bmd, by all means. I realize the forum is still young and you’re finding your admin/mod footing, but if you’re making a departure from hands off with the exception of the four bullet points in your initial Guidelines, I think that needs to be made clear.

    • RE: Mod Voice

@Pavel I don’t believe your previous engagement with the community involved misplaced jokes about active moderation on your part. That didn’t become a thing until you actually had mod powers. Which means you are aware of the difference in your position.

Ignoring that is to suggest your ability to say whatever you want is more important than maintaining any sort of awareness of authority implicitly held.

You seem to have reined in some of that, but for someone so quick to have employed moderation tools in the beginning days, I think you might benefit the most from reconsidering your position on how you speak and act as a mod, and not just when employing your “mod” voice.

@hellfrog You know what sounds like Copper? Pure awesomeness.

As a know-nothing player early on, and really for my short time there with that character, Copper was the absolute highlight of my experience with a small group of other Red Wardens. I still remember it with genuine fondness.

    • RE: Mod Voice

@Pavel To be clear, I don’t think you were abusing your mod powers, but rather making the point that you are a mod and not solely a community member. I absolutely believe a mod needs to moderate their voice out of recognition of that simple truth. Moderate, not silence. I also respect that you would make the choice to step down if those were your only options.

They’re probably not your only options, but I still encourage you to think about how you engage when you are, in fact, still a mod.

    • RE: The Stupid Things We Do

@Herja I think that’s probably a good method for keeping yourself healthy and happy, but I also think it’s a little sad in that it requires a start position that people only wish to engage in a transactional manner. I don’t mean this to be judgmental or that you need to change or anything, I just read this and it brought me down a bit. You clearly state that it some and not all, so I’m not trying to make this a defining thing for you, but I just wanted to respond in general.

I have definitely been, and really still am, one of those people that bounced, more than I’ve ever stuck, and it has never been because I did not enjoy particular people I RP’d with or that I was only hoping for something from them (once again knowing you don’t mean everyone).

I almost always bounced from a MU for reasons to do with my own inability to find a sticking point. With things like discord and the like now, it’s easier to stay connected to people even when you don’t stick, but despite us probably never having played together, I’m sure there were others like me who enjoyed their IC connections with you despite failing as RP partners.

I lost the point somewhere, probably didn’t have one, other than maybe generally feeling it’s too bad that setting that expectation is the safer bet.

@Roz Not sure if there was another kind of cleansing, but for what Rowan might be thinking, if it was bad info, it was certainly going around. I definitely remember a cleansing thing being said to be necessary to do magic and only happened to a person by another person who had it done to them. Which seems to be pretty distinct from just a general cleansing of the land.

    • RE: Equalizing Character Progression

@mietze One of the big problems with The Reach’s catchup mechanism came about from early projections of a 2-3 year life for the game and the max possible XP gain per week supposedly a known quantity 😄

I was overly tickled with myself at the time, but when 6-month catchup became even 30xp per week, it became silly. Let alone what it would become years later. It was definitely a learning experience though.

I am a big fan of @Roz’ approach. It gives people XP to play with each week and things to look at to spend, but when a new person comes in, they don’t, for example, start at gnosis 1 and hit gnosis 5 in 6 months. It also allows them to build a mostly comparable character if they’d like to, with XP to use how they want if they want to bank some. A complete character from CG at an XP pool equivalent to the rest of the game makes for better IC continuity than every newb being a zero-to-hero in a few months.

A set XP per week with an understood common pool also allows game runners to manage their game progression since the only thing they have to account for is a roughly equivalent power level that they can slow down or speed up as necessary.

    • RE: hobos Temporary Ban Discussion Thread

@Pavel I didn’t get banned from MSB, but I did have a certain investment in it as well and had my own thoughts about what happened. I don’t mind more moderation if that’s going to be the thing, or honestly even more touch-and-go moderation in instances where there’s consensus among admin as to a particular subject that storms the forums at any given time.

Guidelines are guidelines for a reason. They don’t need to become stale or adhered to religiously for all time. They don’t even need to be super long and intricate. I just think they need to be clear.

@tsar I haven’t really been participating in the threads, so I don’t say this out of a desire to keep it going. I just would like to see this forum do well and so I bring up things that matter to me in that regard.

There’s likely a plugin way, or a fancy way, or whatever. But here’s a modestly tested webportal hack for open scenes for you to do with as you please. Basically just minor tweaks to the active scene endpoints and portal page and renamed.
